Challenge
High-volume industrial wood waste & costly annual disposal fees.
Solution
A dedicated pallet repair-and-return facility, less than 10 miles from their warehouse.
Results
Estimated annual cost savings of $2 million, with 8,000 repurposed pallets saved from landfills every month.
A global leader in the design and manufacturing of kitchen, bath and plumbing products came to Millwood through a client referral. One of their locations faced a growing problem: it was spending over $60,000 a month on waste disposal.
Not only were they discarding tens of thousands of wood pallets annually, but they were paying full price for replacement pallets with each new order. In short, our customer had two presenting issues: costly disposal fees and mounting landfill waste – contrary to their long-term net zero goal.
Net-zero: The balance between the greenhouse gases a company produces and the amount it removes or offsets. For manufacturers, this often means reducing emissions across operations and supply chains, while minimizing waste sent to landfill through more sustainable practices.
Identifying the Real Problem, Implementing a Reliable Vendor Managed Inventory Program at Scale
When we analyzed the pallets they had been using at our ISTA-certified packaging science lab, we identified a root cause beneath the presenting issues: their previous supplier was providing the wrong specification.
This hidden decision resulted in an inferior product, unfit for the scale of this customer’s operations. We remedied this immediately with a proven, durable and reusable pallet spec – one that would support their growth aspirations, not hinder them.

Delivering More Than A Pallet: Satisfying Sustainability Requirements with a Pallet Recycling Program
Hearing our customer’s ESG concerns, we went a step further, establishing a dedicated repair-and-return facility less than 10 miles from their location. We opened, equipped and staffed this fully operational vendor managed inventory program in less than three months, integrating it seamlessly into the customer’s existing supply chain operations.
The results were immediate and impactful. Each month, the facility repairs and repurposes approximately 8,000 pallets for this customer – totalling 96,000 pallets annually – saving tons of wood waste from landfill and significantly reducing our customer’s carbon footprint, in line with their commitment to environmental sustainability.
Closing the Loop, Partnering for Long-Term Success
This dual solution helped the customer realize estimated annual savings exceeding $2 million (based on combined disposal fees and new pallet purchasing costs). With the right spec and a circular economy-supporting facility nearby, they were empowered to grow their business the way they wanted.
That is the kind of supply chain success Millwood wants all customers to experience: a growth story built on a mutually beneficial partnership, supported by our expansive network of facilities across North America.

A Broader Lesson for Supply Chain Leaders
For manufacturers operating at scale, this case study highlights a broader truth: inefficiencies in pallet management are rarely isolated issues; they often point to deeper gaps in visibility, control and long-term planning.
Too often, pallet procurement and recovery are treated as transactional functions, rather than strategic levers within the operation. Over time, this can lead to rising costs, inconsistent quality and unnecessary environmental impact.
A custom vendor managed inventory program changes that dynamic. By taking a more integrated approach to pallet supply, maintenance and recovery, manufacturers can improve consistency, reduce administrative overhead and create a more predictable cost structure.
When paired with a structured pallet recycling program – perhaps even in the form of a purpose-built facility less than 10 miles away – the impact extends further. Organizations can reduce landfill waste, extend asset lifecycles and make measurable progress toward sustainability goals.
Ultimately, the opportunity lies in rethinking pallet management as a core operational function. With the right custom solution in place, manufacturers move beyond reactive decision-making to build a more efficient, intentional and sustainable operation.
At Millwood, we partner with manufacturers across industries to design and implement vendor managed inventory programs that align with their operational and sustainability needs. Whether this involves optimizing existing processes or introducing a new pallet recycling program, our focus remains on delivering long-term, measurable results.
