For decades, the GMA pallet has been the backbone of American shipping. Defined by its standard 48×40 GMA pallet size, this spec became the most widely used pallet format in North America, powering efficiency across manufacturing, retail, grocery and industrial supply chains.
In the 1960s, the Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA), now known as the Consumer Brands Association, helped unify logistics by promoting a single, standardized pallet footprint.
These GMA pallet dimensions (48 inches by 40 inches) allowed manufacturers, warehouses and carriers to operate with a shared expectation, reducing friction, improving compatibility and increasing throughput across the entire supply chain.
However, there’s a contemporary reality that needs to be acknowledged:
The GMA no longer governs or maintains pallet specifications because it no longer exists. Its successor, The Consumer Brands Association, has different goals and priorities – standardized pallet dimensions are not one of them.
So, while the term ‘GMA pallet’ is still widely used, the organization that originally defined the standard no longer provides oversight, certification or enforcement. In today’s fast-moving North American supply chain, that distinction matters.
What is a GMA Pallet?
A GMA pallet refers to a 48×40-inch wooden stringer pallet that became the industry default for consumer goods distribution.
Typical GMA pallet dimensions and characteristics include:
- Length: 48 inches
- Width: 40 inches
- Style: Stringer construction
- Common deck configuration: 7 top boards / 5 bottom boards (can vary)
- Entry: 4-way partial entry
- Use case: Grocery, retail, food & beverage and general distribution
Historically, GMA recycled pallets were categorized into grades, starting at 1A (the highest), and moving on to 1 and 2 (lower grades), to indicate condition and repair level. These grades provided a shared language for buyers and sellers.
Without a governing body managing these grades, however, there is now no universal way to ensure those definitions are applied consistently. While the concept of GMA pallet size still carries name recognition, the quality behind that label can vary significantly from supplier to supplier.
The Reality of Modern ‘GMA Pallets’
Over time, the original clarity of GMA pallets has become blurred.
Regional recycling practices, varying repair techniques, and inconsistent inspection standards have created a fragmented landscape where:
- Two pallets marketed as GMA-equivalent may perform very differently,
- Load capacity can vary widely,
- Repair quality is inconsistent,
- Deckboard spacing and thickness are not uniform and
- Structural integrity depends on the recycler, not the label.
In other words, what was once a unified system has evolved into a patchwork of interpretations. For procurement teams and supply chain leaders, this introduces real operational risk – especially in automated environments or high-throughput distribution networks.

Millwood’s Role: Restoring Confidence in the GMA Pallet Standard
Millwood entered the recycled pallets industry in the 1980s, long before sustainability became a widespread priority or a marketing message. Early on, we recognized an essential truth:
Customers don’t just need pallets; they need consistency, predictability and trust.
As the traditional GMA pallet standard became less defined, we invested in building systems that could replace assumption with science-backed verification.
Today, Millwood continues the legacy of the GMA pallet by combining:
- A nationwide recycling and repair network,
- Automated inspection and repair technology,
- Data-driven grading systems and
- Engineering validation through our Packaging Science Lab.
These capabilities mean that we don’t rely on outdated labels; we verify performance at scale. The results are simple but powerful: reliable, new and recycled pallets that perform predictably across every facility, every load, and every application.
Preserving a Legacy, Advancing a Standard
The original GMA pallet dimensions (48×40) represent the genesis of the modern freight movement. That footprint remains foundational today, but we believe there is room for improvement – for redefinition.
That’s why Millwood honors the intent of the original GMA pallet standard (uniformity and interchangeability), while advancing it through:
- Measurable grading criteria,
- Automated inspection systems,
- Documented tolerances and
- Verified load performance.
Our recycled pallets – Premium A1, Grade A and Grade B – align with legacy GMA classifications (1A, 1 and 2), but go further by introducing repeatability across our entire network.
This ensures that whether you’re sourcing recycled pallets in one region or across multiple locations, you receive the same, consistent quality every time.
Millwood’s Verified GMA Pallet Grading System
Because the term ‘GMA pallet’ no longer guarantees consistency, Millwood has established a grading system that does. Each pallet is inspected, measured and verified – not assumed.
Premium A1 Recycled GMA Pallets
Nearly new appearance and maximum reuse potential
Premium A1 pallets represent the highest level of performance within GMA recycled pallets. Designed for environments where cleanliness, consistency and presentation matter, these pallets closely resemble new pallets in both appearance and structural integrity.
They feature:
- No stringer repairs,
- Deckboards with controlled spacing (≤3½”),
- ≥60% bright wood; no contaminants,
- ≤1” out of square and
- Verified load rating through automated inspection.
These pallets provide the look and performance of new GMA pallets, with the added benefit of sustainability and cost efficiency.
Use Cases:
- Food and beverage manufacturing
- Retail and grocery distribution
- Pharmaceutical and CPG supply chains
- Closed-loop reuse systems
Grade A Recycled GMA Pallets
Balanced durability for everyday operations
Grade A pallets deliver dependable performance for operations that require strength, consistency and cost control. They represent the most versatile option within the GMA recycled pallet category.
Each Grade A pallet meets the following criteria:
- Minor stringer repairs permitted,
- Solid or plated stringers,
- Consistent deckboard spacing and alignment,
- Clean, functional appearance,
- ≤1” out of square and
- Verified load performance.
Grade A pallets strike the ideal balance between performance and value, making them suitable for multi-trip applications across a wide range of industries.
Use Cases:
- General warehousing and distribution
- Cross-dock operations
- Packaged food and beverage
- Automated or semi-automated systems
Grade B Recycled GMA Pallets
Economical strength for industrial and one-way use
Grade B pallets are built for durability in demanding environments where cost efficiency is critical and appearance is secondary.
As such, they are marked by:
- Repaired stringers or plugs (>1¼”),
- Wider deckboard spacing (≥4”),
- Cosmetic wear acceptable,
- ≤1” out of square and
- Verified for safe, one-way or industrial use.
These pallets provide reliable performance for heavier loads and less controlled supply chains.
Use Cases:
- Industrial equipment and materials
- Construction and manufacturing
- Export shipments and one-way distribution
Why GMA Pallet Verification Matters
Because the original governing body no longer defines or enforces GMA pallet standards, the responsibility for consistency now rests entirely with your supplier.
Without verification, inconsistencies can lead to:
- Product damage and loss,
- Equipment inefficiencies or downtime,
- Safety concerns for operators and
- Increased total cost of ownership (TCO).
That’s why leading companies are shifting their mindset: from simply asking for ‘GMA pallets’ to requiring verified, performance-backed pallet solutions.
The SURE Process optimizes your packaging and supply chain with custom design, integrated manufacturing, proven testing and sustainable impact, over four clear stages:
- Study: We work with you to assess your operations, product flow, challenges and goals and gain a comprehensive picture.

A Better Way to Source GMA Pallets
The term ‘GMA pallet’ may still dominate the industry, but without oversight, it no longer guarantees quality.
Millwood bridges that gap by delivering:
- Verified consistency across every pallet,
- Nationwide scale and sourcing stability,
- Engineering-backed performance and
- A commitment to partnership, focused on your company’s supply chain success.
We don’t just supply GMA pallets. We restore confidence in what they’re supposed to be.
